National Poetry Day UK 2026

It’s that time of year again … Time to write, read, listen to, share and enjoy poetry! This years theme is wonder, celebrating nature and magic and here are three poems by yours truly in that theme. Enjoy.

The Etymologist

Alabaster monoliths; what lies beneath

you written tombs whitewashed of

meaning, speechless laments of

forgotten definitions? Each remnant note

lost in century’s time

inked tokens of what was once read and

understood. If I were to excavate your

origins beneath pallid palimpsests once

so bright, now cenotaphs to vanished

voices,

what would I discover? Connotations

deciphered through serif strokes of

present-day pens? A metamorphic fossil-

phrase sans meaning?

Transmuted, yet bearing vestiges of the

meaning you once conveyed.

Clio

‘Neath hands lichen stone,

gentle textures teach fingers;

read history’s braille.

And looking again

with hindsight my carriage to

a time before us.

To see glacial blade

carving mountains, drumlins and

hills—primordial craft.

Unrelenting teeth

whittling shards beneath eat;

thaw reveals masterpiece.

Roll on eons and

I see us devastate;

lake recreated.

Ever damning, this

structure bars an ancient force

awaiting its age.

Untitled

That’s old magic in there.

This way strays from main path

of gravelly order where lies deep black

waters for sure. Yet this rutted route,

in shade of pines and deciduous trees,

where does it go? Winding up rocky

outcrop carved by a wet winter’s stream.

Needle-fall carpets of rust orange rising

out of sight.

Your outer wanderer hesitates where your

inner wonderer wakes. There’s the pull of

conflicting plans. You know where the gravel

lands. There’s reward in treading paths

well-known. But this trail; where will you

be thrown? To misfortune or providence?

You step closer for a better look and breathe

deep of pine and broadleaves. Now you hear,

as if by magic,

the stream.

Deep moss and pine and broadleaf green;

pixies beneath mushroom refuge, trolls,

their rockfaces in the crags, imps cloaked

in ferns. You better step back and back again

and back

once more

Just to be sure.

Enjoy those? Then check out:

A side-step from my usual novel-sized offerings yet still with strong leanings to my love of fantasy and sci-fi, with odes to nature, a long-form memory poetry.
